Hildegard Weber Johnson (08-12-2010)
Hildegard Weber Johnson, 75, of Pulaski is finally at peace in the Lord on Aug. 10, 2010. Born in Dieburg, Germany, Hildegard immigrated to the United States upon her marriage to Ralph Edwin Johnson. They spent the next 30 years traveling the world with the U.S. Army. Hildegard loved being a military wife and loved her military “family.” Upon retirement, they settled in Annandale. While in Northern Virginia, Hildegard volunteered with the Smithsonian Institution in the Castle. After her children were grown, she worked for 22 years at the George Mason Regional Library. Hildegard became an animal rights supporter after seeing the Brian Davies film “Say Goodbye” and fostered a love for animals and animal rights activism in her children. She had an incredible green thumb and spent many hours with her gardens and houseplants. She was fluent in both German and English, could read and speak Latin and also learned some Japanese, French and Russian along the way. Although Hildegard loved the Northern Virginia area and its proximility to the Washington, D.C. museums and National Mall, she moved to Pulaski in 2008 to enjoy the climate and natural beauty of the area.
She often remarked upon how happy she was being able to see Peak Knob from her living room window.
Hildegard is survived by her brother, Norbet Weber of Germany; her children, Barbara Johnson, Michael Johnson, Judith Peele and their spouses, Kathleen Debold, Amy Johnson and Abram Peele; her grandchildren Blair, Kevin, Matthew and Thomas; a niece she thought of as a daughter, Annette Alonso; a large family in Germany and many friends in the U.S. Always thinking of animals and their needs, she made arrangements for her devoted companion dog, Wendy, to stay with family. She will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery with her beloved husband Major Ralph E. Johnson (Ret).
Mrs. Johnson will be cremated.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Aug. 13, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Stevens Funeral Chapel, Pulaski with Rev. Jim Linkous officiating. The family will receive friends after the service. Burial will be Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010 at 8:45 a.m. from Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington.
In remembrance of Hildegard, those that wish may make contributions in her honor to the Disabled-American Veterans, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, the Wildlife Federation or the Veteran’s or animal support group of your choice.
